Incarcerated National Unity Platform party supporters grappling with charges of treason yesterday went riot protesting their delaged freedom after braving close to two years on remand at Luzira and Kitalya prisons.
The 28 NUP members are apparently losing it to mental depression due to their prolonged detention and consistent rejection of all their bail application efforts ranging from the tenure of Lt. Andrew Gutti and now Brig. Gen Freeman Mugabe as chairperson of the General Court Martial.
It is only 4 out of the 32 that were given bail this year but slapped with stringent sanctions that bar them from stretching past Kampala and Wakiso districts.
The remaining 28 have been praying for bail but all in vain.
In the previous hearings, the state prosecution led by Lt. Gift Muhabamwe introduced treason charges and amended the old charge sheet.
The move according to the lawyers for the accused is aimed at thwarting all efforts to achieve bail.
It is important to note that the Constitutional court nullified the trial of civilians in the military courts.
